Firefighters rescued a ‘silly goose’ after she fell through the ice on Cape Cod
The 4-year-old golden retriever was stranded about 200 feet out from the shore of Goose Pond in Chatham, fire officials said.
A silly goose had to be rescued after she fell through the ice at the fittingly-named Goose Pond.
At about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, the Chatham Fire Department responded to a report of a dog that had fallen through the ice on the south side of the pond. The 4-year-old golden retriever, whose name turned out to be Goose, was trapped about 200 feet out from shore with her head and front paws above water, Chatham fire officials said in a statement.
Goose’s owner explained that he had let her out about 15 minutes before responders arrived, according to the fire department. With some help from ice rescue crews, the soggy doggy was soon safe and sound back on land.

Though she was cold and tired, Goose “showed no signs of severe distress” and soon warmed up beside her owner’s fireplace. However, fire officials are taking the incident as an opportunity to remind residents that “no ice is safe ice.”
“In this case, the ice was several inches thick immediately adjacent to where Goose fell through,” the Chatham Fire Department said in the statement. “Goose’s owner did the exact right thing in this situation by calling 911 and resisting the urge to go on the ice himself.”
