A 21-year-old South Yarmouth man died in a single-car crash on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 1:17 p.m., Yarmouth police received multiple reports of the crash on Highbank Road near Coveview Drive in South Yarmouth.
Responding officers discovered the vehicle overturned in a nearby wooded area and engulfed in flames. “Officers attempted to render aid to the operator, who was still inside the vehicle, but were unable to extinguish the fire,” police said in a release.
The Yarmouth Fire Department arrived soon after. Despite these efforts, the 21-year-old sole occupant, whose name has not yet been released, succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
Three Yarmouth police officers were treated for smoke inhalation at Cape Cod Hospital.
“The Yarmouth Police ask the community to keep the family of the victim, their loved ones, and responding first responders in their thoughts during this difficult time,” the department said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Yarmouth police and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding the crash should contact Yarmouth police at 508-775-0445.
