Police said Janice Goldsmith, 81, struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, which was stopped in the breakdown lane.

A Needham woman was killed Monday afternoon in a crash in York, Maine.

Around 3:14 p.m., Maine State Police responded to the crash on the Maine Turnpike near Mile 5 southbound.

The preliminary investigation suggests the driver of a 2014 Toyota sedan struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, which had a mechanical malfunction and was stopped in the breakdown lane with the required reflective triangles placed near the vehicle, police said.

Southbound traffic was limited to one lane for three hours and then two lanes for two additional hours.

The driver of the Toyota, Janice Goldsmith, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
