A 14-foot male shark was spotted on Mayo Beach in Wellfleet on Wednesday morning.

The New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance received a report of a possible live thresher shark stranded in shallow water, the alliance wrote on Facebook.

However, the thresher shark died just before the team reached Mayo Beach.

It is “not unusual for thresher sharks to strand in New England in the fall as they are trying to navigate to warmer waters to the south. Like many marine animals, this shark took a wrong turn and ended up in Wellfleet’s inner harbor,” the alliance wrote in the post.
