A 71-year-old cranberry bog worker died Friday after equipment rolled over him, pinning him underneath while he was working, the Bourne Police Department said.
According to a press release, the Bourne Police responded to the cranberry bogs behind 1054 County Road at 8:26 a.m. for a workplace accident.
When police arrived, the officers found the man “pinned” under some equipment. Officers and paramedics provided CPR but pronounced the man dead.
The police say that the Bourne man was operating a piece of equipment in the cranberry bogs when it rolled over on top of him, pinning him underneath.
The incident is under investigation by the Bourne Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detectives, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The police say there is no further information available currently.
“The Bourne Police Department’s collective thoughts are with the family, friends, and co-workers of the victim in this incident,” the release said.
In a statement, state Rep. Steve Xiarhos, who represents Bourne, said, “My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this heartbreaking time.”
Xiarhos said that the man’s co-workers, along with the first responders, did everything they could to save his life when the accident occurred.
“This is a difficult reminder of the important work our farmers do every single day,” Xiarhos said. “They work long hours, seven days a week, often in challenging conditions, to support their families and to help feed all of us.”
He continued, “My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
