3 Mass. companies are among the most ethical in the U.S., according to MarketBeat

Several New England-based companies also made the list.

Three Massachusetts companies are among the top 118 most ethical businesses in the U.S., according to a survey from financial media company MarketBeat.

The study surveyed 3,012 respondents in October, using a nationally balanced sample, to identify which companies they felt best aligned “with their personal ethics and values.” Hershey Company in Pennsylvania earned the top overall spot.

Ocean Spray — No. 4

Ocean Spray, based in Lakeville, was the highest ranked Massachusetts company, coming in fourth overall. The farmer-owned cranberry cooperative keeps profits in the hands of its grower-members. It’s sustainability efforts, including wetland preservation and water efficient cranberry farming, are “deeply tied to Massachusetts’ landscape,” according to MarketBeat.

Taza Chocolate, Somerville — No. 56

Small-batch chocolate company Taza Chocolate in Somerville, ranked 56th, and is known for its “direct trade” sourcing model that cuts out the middlemen and pays its cacao farmers fairly. Its open-factory tours also contribute to its reputation for transparency.

Cape Air, Hyannis — No. 110

Cape Air, placing 110th on the list, is known for its cooperative ownership structure and employee-focused culture. The Hyannis-based company has several sustainability programs, and has invested in electric commuter airplanes.

CVS Health, based in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, ranked fifth overall. The company won consumer support after discontinuing tobacco sales in 2014, sacrificing billions in revenue, has made it a consumer favorite. The company invests in mental health, pharmacy access, and community clinics, according to MarketBeat. .
