Manchester-by-the-Sea police and firefighters on Wednesday rescued a woman stuck in a swampy area in the woods off Route 128, officials said.
A middle-aged woman who was walking in the evening “lost her way and became disoriented,” Fire Chief James McNeilly told Boston.com.
After following sounds of traffic from nearby Route 128, the woman was led into a swamp area, where she called 911, McNeilly said.
North Shore Regional 911 used What3Words — “a location technology that divides the world into 10-foot squares and assigns each one a unique three-word address” — to find the woman, the fire department said on Facebook.
He said the woman, who declined medical attention, was found in the area adjacent to Route 128, between School Street and Pine Street.
“Manchester Police was then able to locate her rapidly, and it actually gave the fire department a better access point to facilitate a rescue,” McNeilly said.
McNeilly added the rescue from dispatch to extrication took about a half hour.
Photos shared by the fire department show first responders wading through waist-deep water toward the woman.
“This coordinated effort highlights the importance of teamwork, communication, and modern technology in achieving successful outcomes during emergency incidents,” the fire department said on Facebook.
