Horse dies, multiple others rescued by firefighters in Attleboro barn fire

The barn is considered a total loss.

Attleboro Fire Department

Attleboro firefighters rescued multiple animals from a barn fire on Wednesday. However, one horse died in the blaze.

The fire department responded to a report of a structure fire at 40 Cumberland St. around 3:30 p.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters were slowed down due to the property’s narrow roadway, the department says.

Firefighters then began working to extinguish the fire and search for the several horses trapped inside the large barn engulfed in flames.

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes, and firefighters stayed on sight for several hours to put out hot spots, according to the department.

“The quick, coordinated actions of our crews under very difficult conditions prevented a much greater tragedy,” District Chief Michael Maitland in a statement. “Their determination and teamwork saved not only the home but also several animals.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the barn is not salvageable, the department says.
