A child riding a bike in a Massachusetts crosswalk was struck by a school bus Tuesday morning, and the driver was arrested in a subsequent altercation, according to police.

Medway Police responded to a report of a struck child in the area of the Francis J. Burke Memorial Elementary School around 8 a.m.

Officers discovered that the bus was traveling at a low speed on Cassidy Lane when the bus collided with the bike, causing one of the bike tires to go underneath one of the bus’s front tires, police say.

The child did not sustain any serious injuries and did not require further treatment after an evaluation by emergency personnel, police say.

The bus driver was arrested “due to his behavior when emotions were high after the crash,” not in relation to the crash itself, police said in the press release.

During the arrest, police removed a knife from the bus driver’s possession. However, the driver was not charged for having a knife on him, as it “was not illegal to possess,” police said.

Kenneth Benjamin, 69, of Franklin, was charged with disorderly conduct and cited for failure to stop for a person in a crosswalk, police say.

Benjamin was arraigned in Wrentham District Court on Tuesday, according to court documents.
