18-year-old killed in Belmont moped crash

Belmont police saw the moped driving erratically and on the wrong side the road and attempted to pull the driver over, authorities said.

An 18-year-old Watertown man was killed while riding a moped Tuesday morning after authorities said he failed to stop for police in Belmont and ultimately collided with an SUV.

The deadly crash occurred at the intersection of Stults Road and Fairview Avenue, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan and Belmont Interim Police Chief Mark Hurley said in a statement.

Belmont police saw the moped driving erratically and on the wrong side of Trapelo Road shortly before 9 a.m. and attempted to pull the driver over, to no avail, the pair said. According to the DA’s office, an investigation suggests the moped continued down Belmont Street and turned left onto Stults Road before colliding with a Honda CRV that was traveling down Fairview Avenue.

Ryan and Hurley did not say whether Belmont police were actively pursuing the moped at the time.

Authorities have not publicly identified the moped rider, who was rushed to a nearby hospital and ultimately pronounced dead. The Honda CRV driver was also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to Ryan and Hurley.

The collision remains under investigation by the DA’s office, Belmont police, and Massachusetts State Police.
