Lawrence police officers assisted a woman give birth outside of a Market Basket on Tuesday.
Authorities received a report around 12:05 p.m. from the mother stating that her water broke in the area of 600 Essex St.
Upon arrival at the scene, the woman was already in labor and before EMS could arrive, she safely delivered the baby with assistance from police officers, the department said in a release.
Emergency personnel assessed the mother and baby before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further care, police said.
“Moments like these remind us of the many ways officers serve their community, sometimes in the most unexpected and beautiful ways,” wrote Lawrence Police Chief Maurice Aguiler in a post on the department’s Facebook page.
