Massachusetts households are earning more than those in any other state, according to a new data map from Visual Capitalist.
The Bay state’s median household income reached $104,828 in 2024, the highest of any other U.S. state, and second only to Washington D.C., at $109,707, in the list of states and territories.
Behind Massachusetts is New Jersey at $104,294, Maryland at $102,905, Hawaii at $100,745, and California at $100,149. All were significantly higher than the national average at $81,604.
Visual Capitalist based its rankings and map on 2024 median household income data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, the most recent figures available.
The data visualization publisher noted that the states with the highest household incomes were concentrated on the coasts. The landlocked state with the highest household earning is Colorado, which is ninth on the list at $97,113.
According to Visual Capitalist, the coastal states had an advantage due to “robust technology, professional services, and government sectors that tend to offer higher-paying jobs,” but they also come with a higher cost of living.
Southern states tended to have the lowest household earnings the U.S. — West Virginia at $60,798, Louisiana at $60,986, and Mississippi had the lowest household earnings at $59,127.
