Motorcyclist, moose killed in Western Mass. crash

Police identified the 20-year-old rider as Wyeth Curtis.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist and a moose died in a late-night collision on Route 7 in Great Barrington, authorities say.

According to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10:17 p.m., State Police received a report of a crash on Route 7 between the Great Barrington Recycling Center and the Monument Mountain Trustees Reservation parking lot.

When police arrived, they found the motorcyclist — later identified as Wyeth Curtis — and the moose on the pavement in the southbound lane.

The DA said initial investigations showed that the moose stepped onto the southbound lane when Curtis struck it, and both died due to the impact.

“The moose appeared to have fallen at the point of impact,” officials said. “The motorcyclist struck the pavement just south of the moose.”

Curtis’s motorcycle continued to travel without him and stopped in the northbound lane. Two additional cars, a Subaru Forester and a Honda Civic, traveling in the northbound lane, crashed due to the motorcycle.
