One person died and another was injured after they were struck by a garbage truck in Lowell early Tuesday morning, according to officials.
The garbage truck backed into a man shortly before 5 a.m. on Spring Street, the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office and Lowell Police Department said in a joint statement.
The man died at the scene, officials said. A woman who was with him was also taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Authorities have not publicly identified either person but said an investigation is underway.
A witness who spoke with The Lowell Sun told the local newspaper the two individuals were homeless and had been sleeping on the narrow Spring Street when the garbage truck reversed into them.
WIN Waste Innovations confirmed one of the company’s drivers was involved in the collision.
“We were extremely saddened to learn that this individual did not survive, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased,” WIN said in a statement, adding that the company is fully cooperating with authorities and supporting its team “throughout this difficult event.”
“Safety remains our highest priority, and based on our initial investigation, our driver was following all safety protocols and operating a vehicle equipped with an audible reverse warning system,” the company said. “While this was a rare and unforeseen incident, we are conducting a thorough internal review to ensure we continue to operate at the highest safety standards.”
