Local and federal investigators on Friday released photos of a suspect who allegedly blew up an ATM in Woburn.
In the surveillance images, the suspect’s face is mostly obscured by a blue mask, though his eyes are visible. He is seen wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and carrying a backpack.
The incident happened just after 9 a.m. Thursday at the Eastern Bank on Mishawum Road, where law enforcement received reports of someone tampering with a drive-through ATM.
When Woburn officers arrived, they discovered the machine had been damaged by what investigators believe was an unknown explosive device, possibly a pipe bomb. Local police requested that the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and FBI Boston bomb technicians come to the scene.
According to investigators, surveillance footage shows a masked man placing an object on the ATM in the early morning hours before quickly leaving the area. Moments later, the device detonated, causing an explosion.
No injuries were reported. Police say the suspect remains at large but don’t believe there is a threat to public safety. The FBI has taken over the investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.
Tips can be sent to Woburn Police at 781-933-1212 ext. zero or the FBI at 857-386-2000.
