A Brockton mother is facing a charge of reckless endangerment of a child after leaving her 22-month-old in a hot car at a Hingham shopping plaza, according to local police.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Hingham police received a report that a child was alone in a car and screaming for their mother outside the Whole Foods at 94 Derby St. The couple who called 911 had parked next to the vehicle and heard the child, who was in a car seat in the back seat, police said.

“The windows were all closed, the engine was off, and the sun roof was open,” police said. “Seeing the child in distress, the couple climbed into the sun roof, unlocked the car, and took the child out while Officers were responding.”

Upon arriving at the scene, officers put the child, who “felt hot and [was] profusely sweating,” in the front seat of an air conditioned cruiser until paramedics arrived. The child was later transported to South Shore Hospital by ambulance.

“The mother returned to her car and told Officers the child was napping and she that she was checking on the child in between shopping at several stores,” police said. “Officers found the mother had last checked on the car 20 minutes earlier before returning to shop.”

Police said it was sunny and 73 degrees outside, “making the interior of the car significantly hotter.”

The condition of the child wasn’t released.

The 44-year-old mother’s name also wasn’t released, as she had not been formally charged as of Wednesday.
