The fatal crash occurred just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Van Buren, a town in northern Maine, according to police.

An 8-year-old girl was killed Wednesday when she was struck by an ambulance in Van Buren, a town in northern Maine, according to Maine State Police.

Just after 4 p.m., state police responded to a crash near Kennedy Terrace and Main Street in Van Buren, where an ambulance traveling north fatally struck Emma Cormier. The girl was attempting to cross the street when she was hit, state police said in a statement.

Ambulance personnel attempted to save Cormier’s life, but she died from her injuries. The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time, and speed is not believed to be a factor, state police said.
