Mail truck driver faces OUI charges following alleged collision with pedestrian, bank

The carrier allegedly injured a pedestrian at a gas station, fled the scene, and crashed into a bank.

A U.S. mail carrier struck a PeoplesBank in Longmeadow, MA.

An allegedly intoxicated mail carrier struck a pedestrian at a Longmeadow gas station, seriously injuring the person, and fled the scene before crashing into a nearby bank, police said.

Robert O’Sullivan, 54, of Westfield, pleaded not guilty at an arraignment at Palmer District Court on Tuesday to charges of being under the influence of liquor, causing serious injury, negligence, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, according to court documents.

According to a press release from the East Longmeadow Police Department, on Tuesday, Aug. 26, the department received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash between a United States Postal Service mail truck and a pedestrian near the gas pumps at the Pride gas station near the center rotary.

Multiple eyewitnesses spoke with officers, saying the driver hit the person near the gas pump, as well as numerous other vehicles. The driver narrowly missed striking other people at the scene as he fled, witnesses said.

Police say a short time later, the nearby PeoplesBank at 201 North Main St. in East Longmeadow reported that a mail truck had crashed into its building.

Officers determined that the operator of the mail truck carrier was the same person who allegedly struck the pedestrian at the Pride station.

Police say first responders transported the injured pedestrian to Baystate Medical Center. The person remains in serious but stable condition.
