A teenager who drowned at Hampton Beach Sunday was a student at Pinkerton Academy, the school confirmed Tuesday.
Youness Kraouch, 17, would have soon entered his senior year, the Derry, N.H school said in a statement.
“He loved soccer and enjoyed lively debates with his fellow students. Youness also loved talking about his culture with others,” the school said.
Kraouch moved to the U.S. from Morocco to finish high school and go to college, CBS News reported. He joined the Pinkerton community last year, the school said.
New Hampshire State Police said the teen had been swimming with his family when he was pulled away by a strong ocean current.
His father attempted to rescue him, but became distressed, police said.
Both father and son were pulled out of the water by first responders, who immediately performed lifesaving efforts on Kraouch, according to police.
Kraouch was pronounced dead at Exeter Hospital. His father was treated and is in stable condition, police said.
Kraouch’s family wants him to be remembered as a “young, beautiful soul” and a “devout Muslim who loved playing soccer,” CBS News reported.
