A widespread search is ongoing in New Hampshire for a 25-year-old teddy bear.
“Teddy” likely went missing on Aug. 14 at one of three New Hampshire locations: Warren Fish Hatchery in Warren, the parking lot by the food court at the Mall at Rockingham Park in Salem, or Bluegreen Vacations South Mountain resort in Lincoln.
Twenty-five years ago, a WWII veteran named Buzzy bought the white teddy bear in Alaska as a gift for Abby Shaw, who had spent time with him while her mother worked as his Veterans Affairs nurse in the dementia unit.
In the summer before second grade, Buzzy taught Shaw to play chess and checkers and participate in wheelchair races with her to see who could get to lunch first.
Buzzy remembered Shaw while on a trip to Alaska with his family and wanted to bring her back something. Shortly after returning with Teddy, Buzzy died.
“The bear has been with me through a lot and came from someone who was really special to me,” Shaw told Boston.com, noting that he’s been by her side amid deaths in the family and the woes of college.
“Teddy is a member of our family and means so much to us,” Shaw wrote in a Facebook post.
“I slept with this bear every night until my daughter was old enough to want him, and she’s slept with him every night the past 6 years,” she added.
Without Teddy, her daughter has experienced “a lot of sleepless nights” and there’s been “a lot of tears” when asking “‘where’s my bear?'” Shaw said.
Following an Aug. 16 post on Facebook, the hunt to bring Teddy home began and soon gained the attention of several local news outlets, including The Eagle-Tribune, WHDH, and Boston 25 News.
“Best case scenario…another little kid picked him up and their parents will see this on the news and… [say] we should get Teddy back,” Shaw said.
