A teenager died Sunday evening in an apparent drowning at Hampton Beach, according to New Hampshire State Police.
At around 6:46 p.m., the State Police Marine Patrol received a report of a possible drowning.
The teenager, a 17-year-old boy whose name is not being released due to his age, had been swimming with family members when he was pulled away from the shore by a strong ocean current, witnesses told police.
The boy’s father then entered the water to try to rescue him but became distressed as well.
“Although State Beach Patrol lifeguards were off duty at the time of the incident, they were called back and responded quickly to the scene,” according to police. “The lifeguards entered the water and brought the teen and his father to shore, where lifesaving efforts were immediately initiated on the teen.”
Both father and son were taken to Exeter Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead. The father was treated and is in stable condition, police said.
