New Hampshire State Police are investigating a 73-year-old woman’s death on Monday evening in a Laconia bay.
The department’s Marine Patrol received a report of a possible drowning in Opechee Bay at 7:11 p.m., according to a release.
Witnesses told police they spotted the victim, later identified as Bonita Johnston of Laconia, swimming alone near Lakeview Estates Beach around 7 p.m. Minutes later, several witnesses reportedly saw Johnston floating face down in the water and ran toward her.
While waiting for emergency personnel to respond to the scene, two witnesses attempted to perform life-saving efforts, authorities said.
Medical personnel at Concord Hospital-Laconia later pronounced Johnston dead.
An autopsy confirmed that she suffered a medical event before drowning.
Authorities request that anyone with further information contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian at 603-293-2037 or [email protected].
