Woman dead after incident in Merrimack River in NH

Police said 67-year-old Claire Knowles was swimming after an inflatable tube in a mild current and suffered a “medical event” while returning to shore.

A New Hampshire woman died after suffering a “medical event” while swimming in the Merrimack River in Concord Sunday morning, according to police.

Claire Knowles, 67, of Concord, was swimming after an inflatable tube in a mild current and suffered the unspecified medical event as she was returning to shore shortly before noon, New Hampshire State Police said in a news release. Two people at the scene attempted lifesaving measures before first responders arrived and took over. 

Knowles was later pronounced dead, police said. 

Concord police and fire crews and the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner assisted Marine Patrol officers at the scene.
