Tip O’Neill Tunnel southbound will be closed Tuesday night

The I-93 southbound lanes will be shut down to traffic overnight on Aug. 19 to make way for “multiple maintenance activities,” MassDOT said in a statement.

The southbound stretch of I-93 in the Tip O’Neill Tunnel will be closed overnight Tuesday to allow for maintenance work, according to MassDOT.

The transportation department announced last week that the shutdown will start at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 and continue until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. The I-93 southbound lanes will be closed starting at exit 20 (Sullivan Square). Access points to the southbound lanes, including from Route 1 (Tobin Bridge), Storrow Drive, and other tunnel on-ramps will also be closed.

Access to I-93 southbound will be maintained from Albany Street, according to MassDOT.

During the closure, crews will be working on “multiple maintenance activities,” officials said.

“Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area,” MassDOT said in a statement. “Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.”

The state said all scheduled work is weather-dependent and subject to change “without notice,” urging drivers to take the following steps to get the most up-to-date traffic conditions:

  • Follow @MassDOT on X to receive regular updates on road and traffic conditions.
  • Download the Mass511 mobile app or visit www.mass511.com to view live cameras, travel times, real-time traffic conditions, and project information before setting out on the road. Users can subscribe to receive text and email alerts for traffic conditions.
  • Dial 511 and select a route to hear real-time conditions.
