A Cambridge woman died Friday in Maine after being struck by a vehicle that jumped a curb, according to the Lewiston Police Department.
Elizabeth Camacho, a Cambridge resident visiting Maine, was hit near Kennedy Park on Friday around 1 p.m. by a Buick that jumped the curb, police said in a Facebook post.
First responders discovered that the vehicle had mounted the curb of Park Street and drove into Kennedy Park before stopping. Camacho was walking along Park Street across from City Hall, the department said.
Camacho was initially rushed to Central Maine Medical Center, then airlifted to Maine Medical Center, where she died from her injuries, according to police.
The incident is under investigation by the Lewiston Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team and Criminal Investigation Division, police said.
The driver, Lionel Francisco, was reportedly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Lewiston police told WMTW.
Francisco, a native of Angola, was driving on a learner’s permit during the crash. He remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
Francisco, 31, is being held at Strafford County Department of Corrections in Dover, New Hampshire, ICE’s online detainee locator system shows.
ICE did not immediately respond to Boston.com’s request for comment.
WMTW reported that Lewiston police were unable to share why Francisco was detained by ICE, and said information “must come from immigration authorities.”
Lewiston police did not immediately respond a request for comment.
To obtain a driver’s permit in Maine, individuals must present two forms of identification and proof of Maine residency, but do not need to show proof of legal presence, according to information from the Department of the Secretary of State. To receive a driver’s license, individuals must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal U.S. presence, according to the department.
Drivers with a driver’s permit must drive with a licensed driver above the age of 20 who have held a license for at least two years, the department says.
