A pack of beagles will soon be up for adoption at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, which recently helped remove 34 dogs from an overcrowded home kennel in Northwestern Massachusetts.
Ten of the beagles are now in ARL’s care, and all are named after bagels: Everything, Blueberry, Pumpernickel, Asiago, Sesame, Cinnamon Raisin, Egg, Marble, Poppy, and Jalapeño Cheddar.
“The dogs range in ages up to 8 years old, are friendly and appear to be well-fed,” ARL added in a news release.
The organization said it worked alongside the Franklin County’s Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Team to retrieve nearly three dozen beagles from the overcrowded home kennel. The owners surrendered the dogs, and local authorities are investigating, ARL said.
“Overcrowding is a complex issue that can lead to serious health concerns not only for animals, but for people living among them as well,” the organization explained. “Animals saved from overcrowding situations can have many health and behavior issues, and over the next few days and weeks, these dogs will need extraordinary care.”
ARL is caring for its 10 beagles — seven females and three males — at its Boston facility, and the remaining dogs are being transferred to organizations in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. The rescue said it will “provide the dogs with compassionate care, veterinary and behavior exams, and spay/neuter services” and later put them up for adoption.
In the meantime, ARL is asking for donations to help support the shelter through the sudden influx of animals.
“Over the coming days and weeks, these sweet beagles will need dedicated, compassionate care to help them heal and thrive,” the organization added in a social media post.
