Hyperthermia likely killed a three-year-old girl who was found dead in a car in Maine on Saturday, police said.
The toddler was found in Milford by Penobscot County Sheriff’s officers, Maine State Police said previously.
The toddler was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed Monday, State Police said in a press release Monday.
The child’s cause and matter of death are pending additional studies, but her body temperature was consistent with the symptoms of hyperthermia, according to the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner.
The toddler’s mother, Kelly Brown, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with manslaughter, police said.
Brown, 40, had an initial appearance at the Penobscot Judicial Center on Monday, where she was formally charged with manslaughter and her bail was set.
Police requested anyone with information related to this case to call Detective Larry Anderson at 207-973-3700 Ext. 9.
Correction: An initial version of this story incorrectly stated that the toddler’s death was likely due to hypothermia. She likely died of hyperthermia, or an elevated body temperature.
