Man arrested in fatal Fitchburg shooting

Jonathan Reyes-Contreras is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, the DA said. 

A New Jersey man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in Fitchburg on Sunday, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early. 

Fitchburg Police responded to Mechanic Street around 12:15 a.m. Sunday for the report of a person shot, the release said.

First responders found a man who had been shot and brought him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. 

Jonathan Reyes-Contreras was arrested around 2:15 p.m. Sunday and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, officials said.

Investigators believe the two parties knew each other, according to the DA.

Reyes-Contreras, 42, is scheduled to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Monday, the release said. 

The incident is under investigation by Fitchburg Police and Massachusetts State Police.
