DA: 16-year-old charged in Dorchester beating that left friend requiring reconstructive surgery

“The injuries here are lasting and traumatic and I wish this young man a full recovery, both physically and emotionally.”

A Braintree 16-year-old was charged last week with assault and battery, accused of beating another teen in a Dorchester park so badly the other boy required reconstructive jaw surgery, authorities announced.

The 16-year-old was arraigned in Dorchester Juvenile Court on the charge of assault and battery causing serious injury, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

He was released on personal recognizance and ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the victim.

On May 11, the victim’s mother reported to police that her son, also 16, had been assaulted the night before at Pope John Paul II Park on Hallet Street in Dorchester, prosecutors said. The mother told police her son had gone to the park to meet up with friends and drink.

During the gathering, the 16-year-old from Braintree allegedly became upset when his ex-girlfriend showed interest in the victim. The Braintree teen allegedly asked his friend to take a walk with him and punched the victim in the face when they were alone, prosecutors said.

“The victim lost his balance, hit his head, and fell unconscious,” the DA’s office said. “The victim said he heard ringing in his ears and was awoken by the juvenile on top of him and punching his face and chest. Others in the gathering observed a large amount of blood on the ground.”

One of the other teens called the injured boy’s mother, and she drove her son to Boston Children’s Hospital. The teen sustained fractures and permanent damage to his teeth. The injuries required “numerous” surgeries, according to the DA’s office, including reconstruction of his jaw.

The Braintree teen texted the injured boy to apologize, the DA’s office said. The victim’s mother told authorities that before the incident, the two boys were best friends.

“The injuries here are lasting and traumatic and I wish this young man a full recovery, both physically and emotionally,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “It’s tragic that the defendant chose to turn what was apparently a friendship into a violent encounter, ending with one person suffering severe injuries and another facing criminal charges.”
