A man is facing drunk driving charges after a 25-year-old died in a crash in Wareham last week.
Raymond Cardoza, 67, of West Wareham was arrested after the crash. He was charged with OUI (manslaughter), OUI (fourth offense), leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license. Cardoza was arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Just after 5 p.m. last Friday, police received a number of 911 calls about a serious crash involving a car and a motorcycle near 2628 Cranberry Highway, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz’s office.
At the scene, they found a man on the ground with life-threatening injuries. He was identified as Jordan Hansen, 25, according to Cruz’s office. Hansen was taken to Tobey Hospital and then transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he died.
Hansen was driving a motorcycle at the time of the crash. Cardoza was located with a damaged Toyota about a quarter mile from the scene. The damage to the car appeared consistent with the crash, officials said.
Cardoza was interviewed by investigators. He told them that Friday was his birthday, and that he had two or three beers when he woke up that morning, they said. Cardoza said that he was driving to Wal-Mart at the time of the crash. Police detected a “strong odor of alcohol” on his breath during the interview, according to Cruz’s office.
Wareham police and State Police troopers assigned to Cruz’s office are conducting an ongoing investigation.
At Cardoza’s arraignment, the state requested that he be held on a $1 million cash bail. A judge set bail at $250,000 with the conditions that Cardoza wear a GPS monitoring bracelet, be confined to his home, and use an alcohol monitoring device three times a day if he posts bail. He is set to appear in court again on Aug. 27.
