Two dogs died Sunday afternoon in a two-alarm fire in East Falmouth.
Firefighters responded to the scene at a home on Lakeshore Drive at about 2:30 p.m. The fire was reported in the basement, and heavy smoke was coming from the house, local fire officials said in a release.
Crews initially entered the home but evacuated after firefighters discovered that the floor above the basement was compromised in several locations.
“Fire crews repositioned to an exterior attack and extinguished the fire,” officials said. “Once the majority of the smoke had cleared from the building, crews were able to reenter and fully extinguish the fire.”
Three residents, who were out of the home when firefighters arrived, were treated for fire-related injuries at Falmouth Hospital, none of which were considered life-threatening. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.
“Unfortunately, the family’s two dogs were unable to escape the fire,” officials said.
The fire remains under investigation.
