State Police are investigating vandalism to the State House steps that occurred early Wednesday.
A suspicious package, potentially left by the vandal, was later found on Boston Common, and the bomb squad was called in, according to State Police.
Troopers responded to the State House at 3:30 a.m. and found white paint and black spray paint at the entrance.
The white paint was poured over the entrance steps, and the word “Divest” appeared to have been spray painted on the gate pillars, according to WCVB. White footprints were also found leading away from the Common, 7News reports.
“We are deeply disturbed to learn about vandalism at the State House overnight. The State House is a revered building steeped in history, and staff works hard to keep it in pristine condition for employees and visitors alike,” Gov. Maura Healey, Speaker of the House Ron Mariano, and Senate President Karen Spilka wrote in a joint statement.
“We are grateful to the Massachusetts State Police and their local, state and federal partners for their quick response and efforts to identify those responsible,” the statement continued.
Later on Wednesday, police received a report of the suspicious package on Boston Common. State Police called in the bomb squad out of an abundance of caution.
The entrance to the State House remains closed, and the investigation into both the vandalism and package is ongoing.
