Vice President JD Vance was greeted by protesters Tuesday when he arrived on Nantucket to headline a Republican National Committee fundraiser on the island.

According to the Nantucket Current, demonstrators assembled on Cliff Road, the street leading toward the evening fundraiser, booing the vice president’s motorcade as it arrived.

The fundraiser cost of $100,000 per couple for general attendance and $250,000 per couple for those joining the host committee, the Nantucket Current reported.

Local activists organized several actions around Vance’s arrival on the island.

Amanda McGonigle, the Falmouth resident behind the viral @catsonacouch Instagram account, organized a rally called “Meowtucket” to protest Vance. She started the account in 2024 as a “joke” to surpass then-senator Vance’s follower count, and it has grown into an online activism community with 1 million followers.

She told Boston.com the goal was to shine a light on the consequences of the Trump administration’s policies and to amplify local organizations supporting marginalized groups.

According to local activists, a rally was held at 2 p.m. at Children’s Beach, with protesters then moving to the Cliff Road bike path at 5 p.m. to be seen by those attending the Republican fundraiser.

Ahead of the protests, McGonigle said she also distributed more than 4,000 “wanted” posters across the island to protest Vance’s arrival. Tuesday’s demonstrations were co-hosted by @CatsOnACouchIndivisible NantucketIndivisible Upper CapeIndivisible Outer CapeMass 50501, and MidCape Indivisible/Cape Cod Women for Change.
