New Bedford man sentenced to prison for aggravated rape of young child

Marc Ribeiro was sentenced to serve 18 to 20 years, followed by five years of probation.

A New Bedford man was convicted of two counts of aggravated rape of a child last Thursday following a jury trial, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn, III.

Marc Ribeiro, 34, was sentenced to serve 18 to 20 years in a state prison, followed by five years of probation, Quinn said in an announcement.

Ribeiro was convicted in Fall River Superior Court of two counts of aggravated rape of child with a five year age difference, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and assault to rape, the DA said in a press release.

Ribeiro sexually assaulted and raped the victim, who was a child at the time, on different instances between July 2015 and July 2019, according to the release.

Prosecutors said the victim disclosed the abuse to her health teacher after a lesson regarding child abuse in 2023.

“This highlights the importance of these educational programs in our local school systems and the role of mandated reporters,” Assistant District Attorneys Jennifer Czapiga and Silvia Rudman said.

“The defendant took advantage of his access to this young victim and repeatedly raped and abused her between the ages of five and seven,” Quinn said. “This conduct committed against a very young and innocent victim is repulsive and warrants a lengthy prison sentence. I commend the victim for her perseverance during this very difficult ordeal.”
