‘They were sons, brothers, uncles, friends’: Stoughton family launches fundraiser after 2 brothers die while fishing

"Their sudden passing has left their loved ones not only grieving, but also facing the overwhelming cost of laying two young men to rest."

In the wake of the deaths of two brothers from Stoughton who both died while fishing in Rhode Island, family members created a GoFundMe to support their funeral expenses.

Brothers Aldino Centeio, 27, and Valdir Centeio, 31, were fishing off the coast of Little Compton, Rhode Island on July 12 when one brother fell into the water. The other brother jumped in “without hesitation,” according to the GoFundMe, in an effort to save him.

Both men were swept away by the current.

“That act of love and bravery speaks volumes about the kind of men they were — selfless, courageous, and full of heart,” the GoFundMe, managed by the brothers’ cousin, Iva Andrade, said.

The GoFundMe is primarily to support the brothers’ funeral expenses. The service will be held July 20, according to the page.

The remaining sum will go to the brothers’ mother, to support her financially as Aldino was “the family’s primary provider.”

As of Wednesday night, the GoFundMe had raised more than $23,000.

“[Aldino and Valdir] were sons, brothers, uncles, friends — bright, vibrant souls who touched the lives of so many,” the GoFundMe reads. “Their sudden passing has left their loved ones not only grieving, but also facing the overwhelming cost of laying two young men to rest.”
