A 38-year-old man was shot and killed by police early Tuesday morning following an armed standoff with authorities at a Fall River home, prosecutors announced.
Domonick Knight, 38, suffered a gunshot wound to the head during an exchange of gunfire with police and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, the Bristol County District Attorney’s office said in a statement.
The DA’s office said police responded to a home on Langley St. around 1:30 a.m. for a call reporting a man inside the home was armed with a gun and threatening to harm himself. Police evacuated residents from the home and then attempted to negotiate with the man, later identified as Knight.
“While securing the area, additional calls continued to come in from family members, reiterating the male’s intent to harm himself,” Fall River police said in a statement. “Given the nature and urgency of the situation, medical personnel were requested to stage nearby. At approximately 2:25 AM, a trained Crisis Negotiator arrived on scene and initiated multiple attempts to communicate with the male using phone calls, text messages, and a loudspeaker. Despite all efforts, communication was not successfully established.”
Officers entered the residence around 3:15 a.m. and gunfire was exchanged, the DA’s office said.
Police said Knight fired on officers from the top of a set of stairs when they entered the doorway.
“Officers returned fire while repositioning away from the entryway,” police said. “Communication efforts continued both prior to and following the exchange of gunfire.”
Police said officers set off a flash bang device and then again made their way into the home. The department released body cam footage from officers who entered the home that captured the exchange of gunfire during the incident, along with photos showing Knight on the floor after being shot. The DA’s office said police found Knight, wounded, on a second-floor landing with two guns “within close proximity.”
“This is an ongoing and active investigation,” the DA’s office said. “An autopsy along with other forensic testing is pending.”
