There is a new, slithering addition to the streets of Somerville.
A large snake was spotted slinking along the side of a road Saturday morning. Somerville Animal Control confirmed it is a ball python.
After a sighting of the snake was posted on the Somerville community Facebook page around 8 a.m. Saturday, residents speculated whether the snake is an escaped pet.
Based on images posted online, the snake appears to be about 3 or 4 feet long and is white with black and brown patches.
Ball pythons can grow to be 3-5 feet long and typically feast on small animals, like rodents and birds. While they can primarily be found on the ground, the snakes are also able to climb trees, according to the Sacramento Zoo.
As of Monday afternoon, Somerville Animal Control confirmed it has not located the snake. Officials ask anyone who comes across the snake to call the non-emergency number for the Somerville Police Department at 617-625-1212.
