Eight horses were killed Tuesday in a two-alarm blaze that destroyed a barn in Walpole, according to fire officials.
The fire broke out at Mor Linn Farm around 11:15 p.m. and escalated to two alarms, according to Walpole Assistant Fire Chief Brian Cherella. He said the flames engulfed a large barn at the North Street property, and the structure is considered a total loss and is now slated for demolition.
The cause is still under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office, Cherella said. While eight horses died in the fire, he said the barn owner was able to rescue another 10.
“He’s a hero in my mind,” Cherella added.
The 150-year-old barn held a mix of pleasure horses and competition horses, WBZ reported. Boston.com has reached out to Mor Linn Farm for comment.
Fire rescue efforts were complicated by Tuesday’s inclement weather, which blanketed the region in rain showers and thunderstorms.
“Severe thunderstorms moving through the area made it more difficult for ladder pipe operations due to the lightning,” Cherella explained, though he said no firefighters were injured in the process.
