70-year-old man killed by fireworks in Wareham

Robert Spagnuolo died at the scene during the July 4 festivities, the district attorney said.

A 70-year-old man died on July 4 in Wareham when a firework he was setting off exploded in his face, authorities announced. 

Robert Spagnuolo of Wareham died at the scene, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said in a statement a day after the incident. 

First responders were called to 34 Beach St. around 9:19 p.m. on July 4 for a 9-1-1 call reporting a person hit by a firework, the DA’s office said. At the scene, Spagnuolo was found with an injury to his face and pronounced dead. 

Witnesses told investigators that Spagnuolo was setting fireworks off at the beach when one exploded in his face.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, the DA’s office said.
