An early morning head-on crash on Route 128 in Gloucester on Monday injured four teenagers and an 80-year-old man — at least three of whom were in critical condition.

According to the Gloucester Fire Department, two vehicles collided head-on on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge over the Annisquam River at about 1:45 a.m. One of the vehicles rolled over in the crash, and first responders had to extricate two people from the vehicles.

Officials didn’t provide more details on the crash in their initial release or specify which victims were traveling together, but they did list the following injuries:

  • An 18-year-old man, who had been trapped in one of the vehicles, was flown via a medical helicopter to a Boston hospital in critical condition.
  • A 19-year-old woman was taken to Beverly Hospital and then transferred to Tufts New England Medical Center, where she was in critical condition as of Monday.
  • Another 19-year-old woman was transported to Beverly Hospital. She was treated and released.
  • The 80-year-old man was taken to Beverly Hospital as well. He was transferred to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, where he was in critical condition as of Monday.
  • Another 18-year-old man went to a hospital in a private vehicle. Fire officials didn’t have information on his condition.

Gloucester Mayor Greg Vega said in a statement that the crash “deeply affected our community.”

“This hits especially close to home, as several of those involved are not only from Gloucester, but are young members of our community,” he said. “We are a city that cares deeply — we’re all holding those impacted in our hearts right now.”

The crash remains under investigation by State Police.
