Father-of-the-bride’s laptop with wedding speech stolen in Beacon Hill just days before ceremony

He and his daughter took to TikTok, offering a reward for his backpack with the laptop.

A bride’s father was in for an unwelcome surprise in Beacon Hill last week when a thief stole his backpack from a rental car and the laptop holding his wedding speech.

The father and daughter took to TikTok on Friday, pleading with the public — and offering a reward — for any information on his stolen bag.

But, it was too late for the wedding, which they said took place on Saturday.

“At the very beginning, it began to interfere with the wedding,” Richard Selby, the father, told CBS Boston of the theft. But, he said, “we can’t let that happen,” and they turned to the community for help.

The family initially offered a $2,000 cash reward—no questions asked—for returning the backpack by posting flyers in Beacon Hill. They later increased the reward to $4,000.

According to a Boston police report, shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, Selby called police at Charles and Pinckney streets in Beacon Hill to report a break-in involving a rental car.

Selby told police that he recently arrived on a flight from California and was visiting his daughter.

He had placed the backpack in the rear passenger side of the rental car, but when he returned, he saw that someone had smashed the window and that his backpack was missing.

Selby told police he had numerous valuables in the backpack, including a computer, passport, checkbook, IDs, and a key ring. He estimated that the backpack contained about $3,000 worth of items.

The police report noted numerous break-ins and motor-vehicle enterings have occurred near the location.

According to the Boston Police Department, the investigation into the missing backpack is ongoing.

“It’s tragic what happened,” Selby said in the TikTok video. “We would appreciate anyone’s help.”

Selby did not return a phone call for additional comment on Monday.
