Wayland police are investigating after discovering over 100 unopened packages dumped in a metal trash bin.
Police, in a press release, said a resident notified them Monday that they had noticed a large trash bin on Commonwealth Road that contained four unopened packages with shipping labels still on them.
Then, on Tuesday morning, police were dispatched to the same bin by the same reporting party, who had found that the number of unopened packages had increased significantly.
“The reporting party believed the packages may be part of a recent package scam affecting residents across multiple towns,” police said, “as they had seen an influx of social media posts about individuals looking for their packages that appeared to have been delivered to the wrong addresses.”
A preliminary investigation by police determined that the packages were marked as delivered, but residents said they never received them.
The department says they located over 100 packages, all of which appeared to be from the same delivery service, UniUni.
Wayland police are working with UniUni to ensure the packages are correctly delivered, according to the release.
The police department also notified the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office of the ongoing investigation.
Martin van den Hemel, an UniUni spokesman, said in a statement that an internal investigation by the company found that the incident was the result of a third-party delivery driver.
The driver was employed by an independent Delivery Service Partner contracted by UniUni and has since been permanently removed from UniUni’s network.
Hemel said UniUni is working to recover the affected packages.
“This behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect UniUni’s service standards or values,” Hemel said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.”
