The eastbound side of the Ted Williams Tunnel was temporarily closed Monday after an Amazon delivery van burst into flames on its way through the tunnel, officials said.
Just after 11 a.m., the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced on X that the tunnel had been closed due to a vehicle fire. The left lane was reopened just before noon, and shortly after, all lanes were open, according to MassDOT.
Flames engulfed the van as cars slowly crept by in a video obtained by The Boston Globe. The van was headed for maintenance and was not delivering any packages, an Amazon spokesperson told the Globe.
One person was in the van but got out safely, and no injuries were reported, the Boston Fire Department told the Globe.
