9-year-old boy struck, seriously injured by trash truck in Amesbury

The driver of the G. Mello Disposal Corp. truck remained at the scene amid the response, officials said.

A young boy suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a trash truck that was collecting curbside waste in Amesbury on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Amesbury fire and police personnel responded to a report of a person struck by a vehicle at the intersection of California Street and California Lane shortly before 9 a.m., according to a statement from the fire department.

At the scene, first responders located a 9-year-old boy, who was conscious and alert but was suffering from serious injuries, fire officials said.

An Amesbury Fire Advanced Life Support ambulance transported the boy to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment. The boy, who was last reported to be in stable condition, was expected to be taken to a Boston hospital for further care.
