Two state troopers saved a duckling from the side of a road in Richmond last month.

While conducting speed enforcement patrol near Richmond Consolidated School recently, troopers from the B Troop Community Action Team witnessed a hawk swoop down and grab an adult duck off the roadway, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.

A baby duck appeared on the road as the hawk flew off, and the duck faced “imminent demise” from being hit by a car, officials said. The troopers pulled a cruiser into the road to block traffic and rescued the duck without incident.

The troopers then transported the duck to a rehabilitation facility using a makeshift box with a water feature, officials said.
