Mass. Legislature sets dates for this year’s sales tax holiday
A sales tax-free weekend will take place on Aug. 9-10.
The Massachusetts Legislature voted on Thursday to set the annual sales tax holiday for Saturday, Aug. 9, and Sunday, Aug. 10.
During the holiday, a suspension of the state’s 6.25% sales tax applies to most retail items priced under $2,500.
“Lowering costs for Massachusetts residents and supporting local businesses is critical for our communities in this time of economic uncertainty,” said Sen. President Karen Spilka, in a statement.
House Speaker Ronald Mariano added, “This year’s temporary suspension of sales tax will bring consumers needed economic relief while boosting revenue for small businesses and retailers.”

A 2018 state law made the sales tax holiday permanent, requiring the Legislature to vote annually to set the dates of the holiday.
A spike in consumer activity routinely boosts indirect tax revenues, according to a release from Spilka’s office. According to the Department of Revenue, the 2024 sales tax holiday generated $3.45 million in indirect tax revenues due to increased economic activity.
The holiday is an added break as families begin to shop for the back-to-school season, supporting local small businesses and retailers.
