Two workers were injured in a “flash fire” at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Newburyport Friday morning, according to local fire officials.
First responders were called to the Dunkin’ at 167 State St. at about 9:52 a.m. for a report of an explosion, Newburyport Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury III said in a statement.
At the scene, firefighters found two workers suffering from “significant burns.” They were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Officials do not believe that an explosion occurred. Instead, a preliminary investigation determined that the workers were injured as they attempted to repair a rooftop refrigerant compressor system, according to Bradbury.
“An arc seemed to have ignited the Freon, resulting in a flash fire. The fire shot upward, burning one of the workers in the face and burning the other worker’s legs,” he said in the statement.
The fire burned out before first responders arrived, and there was no damage to the building. No further information was released about the people who were injured.
Newburyport firefighters remained on the scene throughout Friday morning. The Newburyport Electrical Inspector and representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were notified.
The Newburyport Fire Department and the State Police’s Fire and Explosion Investigation unit are continuing to investigate.
