Update: In a subsequent release Monday morning, officials said one of the swimmers was a 25-year-old Lynn woman; she was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital and then to a Boston hospital via a medical helicopter. The other swimmer, a 24-year-old East Boston woman, was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital and then transferred to a Burlington hospital. Both women remained in critical condition Monday morning, officials said.
Initial story below:
Two swimmers were pulled from the water unresponsive off Plum Island Point near Newburyport on Sunday night.
Newburyport police and fire crews responded to a report of the swimmers in distress at about 7 p.m., according to a release. Two boats with fishermen were nearby.
One boat brought one of the swimmers to shore; the other rescued the second swimmer, who was then taken to shore by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Both swimmers, who were not identified, were transported to hospitals in critical condition, officials said.
