N.H. woman fatally struck by Amtrak train while attempting to save dog
Alicia Leonardi, 42, and her friend were trying to get the friend's dog off the tracks Monday when they both were hit.
A New Hampshire woman died Monday after being struck by an Amtrak train while attempting to save a dog, officials said.
Alicia Leonardi, 42, from Plaistow, was walking with a friend and his dog that afternoon along train tracks in a wooded area in Exeter, New Hampshire, according to a statement from the Exeter Police Department.
“The train approached quickly from a corner behind them and the unleashed dog ran onto the tracks at the sound of the train’s horn,” police said. “The couple attempted to get the dog off the tracks and as a result both people were struck.”

Leonardi suffered fatal injuries, and her friend had minor injuries. The dog was not hurt, according to NBC10 Boston.
“She is a brave girl,” Leonardi’s mother, Cathleen Collis, told the news station. “She’s always been a brave girl. Smart, loved to help people, loved to help everybody.”
Leonardi was living in Manchester, and the friend was her ex-boyfriend, according to NBC10.
The incident remains under investigation.
