Police respond to stabbing at MGH, the second act of violence there this week

A suspect was taken into custody near the Cox Building at Massachusetts General Hospital Thursday morning.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing at Massachusetts General Hospital Thursday morning, the second instance of high-profile violence around the hospital this week.

Just after 8:30 a.m., officers from the Boston Police Department responded to reports about a person with a knife in an MGH lobby, according to a BPD spokesperson. While en route, they were informed that a stabbing occurred and were given a description of the suspect.

At the scene, police found a man suffering from a stab wound who was already receiving treatment. The injury was not considered life-threatening.

Officers quickly identified a suspect, 56-year-old John Huddleston of Boston, and took him into custody near 90 Blossom St., according to the BPD spokesperson. This address is near the entrance to the Cox Building at MGH. The stabbing occurred in a “lobby vestibule,” police said.

Huddleston is set to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges of mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

BPD officials did not release any more information about Huddleston, the victim, or what led to the alleged attack.

A shocking incident disrupted the hospital and surrounding areas earlier this week. Officials said that a man experiencing a “mental health issue” attacked a police officer working a construction detail near MGH Tuesday morning.

As he grappled with police, the suspect shot himself in the foot. Bystanders eventually helped officers subdue the suspect, who was later identified as Elvis Haughton, 46, of Boston. Haughton was arrested and is being held without bail.
